Design in Progress

On a rural hilltop site with 360 degree views, this 4,800 square foot residence takes its principal axis of orientation from the narrow ridge on which it sits. Wings of the house are rotated off the main axis and aligned with the cardinal points of the compass. The living spaces, the pool, and its wind-sheltered terrace face south. The master bedroom looks to the sunset. A guest suite looks to the sunrise and the children’s bedrooms are arranged along the northern wing. Deep overhangs shade the building in the summer but allow the sun to warm the house in the winter. A louvered trellis structure provides adjustable shading for the main outdoor spaces. Radiant heat warms the concrete floors and photovoltaic panels provide electricity.
