MANHATTAN BEACH 1997

DALE-JOHNSON RESIDENCE

This 2,700 square foot residence re-uses the foundation and several walls of an existing 900 square foot 1940s tract home. The triangular geometry of the lot allows for a unique overlapping of two-story volumes that converge above the dining room. This volume in the center of the small house gives one the impression of being in a larger house. A wooden bridge crossing the space at the second level connects the bedroom wings. The exterior combines smooth, pigmented stucco, wood doors, windows and trellises with a tile roof in a way that evokes earlier California architectural styles but is at the same time fresh and modern.
